“Empires of Colour” traces how colours, such as red and purple, moved from Indigenous knowledge to imperial expansion, commercial networks, and European art and maps, revealing the material geographies embedded in some of the visual representations of empire. 

Jeffery Hewitt is an Associate Professor at Osgoode Hall Law School. Professor Hewitt’s research interests include Indigenous legal orders and governance, constitutional law, human rights, legal education, business law, as well as art + law and visual legal studies. He is a co-editor of Indigenous Spiritualities and Religious Freedom (2025).
